Digital journalist (Full-time)

Location: Macao office or remote

Macao News is hiring a full-time digital journalist to join our growing, dynamic team. The journalist should have at least 3 years of experience in the industry, and enjoy writing about a broad range of subject matter, from emerging industries to technology, government initiatives, F&B, culture and environmental issues.

Scope of role:

  • Writing sharp and accurate digital copy 
  • On-the-spot, breaking news reporting as needed
  • Pitch stories, staying on top of key developments in Macao
  • Conduct interviews
  • Source images
  • Attend press conferences and events
  • Use WordPress as needed
  • Collaborate with designer, videographer, social media team as needed

Requirements:

  • Fluent in English, Cantonese and/or Mandarin
  • Strong English writing skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience
  • Passion for daily news and curiosity about Macao and its place in the nation, region and wider  world

Social Media Editor (Full-time or part-time)

Location: Macao office or remote in an East Asian time zone

We are looking for a social media editor to manage and grow our social media presence as well as drive traffic to our site.

The job involves:

  • Devising, implementing and refining an audience engagement strategy
  • Working closely with editors and writers to maximise the reach of stories that we publish
  • Pitching story ideas that ride search, news, and social media trends
  • Optimising our stories for reach, search and exposure
  • Handling the day to day operations of our social media accounts, including posting, scheduling and writing copy

We’re happy to consider this as either:

  • A full-time role for a young go-getter, not long out of journalism school, but with work experience and internships under their belt, including some experience of audience engagement; or
  • A part-time role for someone with a few years of experience in audience engagement 

Having command of Chinese, or Portuguese, or both, are big advantages.

Simultaneous interpreter and translator (freelance, retainer) 

Location: Macao

Macao News is looking for English-Chinese simultaneous interpreters and translators that we can work with on an as-required, freelance basis.

Applicants will be responsible for supporting our journalists during Chinese-language interviews, transcribing interviews and other ad-hoc translations. 

Requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years’ of translation experience
  • University degree in translation, interpreting or similar field
  • Native Cantonese and Mandarin speaker
  • Fluent in English
  • Attention to detail
  • Accurate, collaborative, reliable
  • On a flexible schedule
  • Able to turn work around quickly according to publishing deadlines
